CHS Prairie Lakes in Elrosa adds fertilizer plant
CHS Prairie Lakes recently finished its latest expansion project, which began construction back in September of 2014. The $3.8 million project, which increased both fertilizer storage capacity and blending abilities at the CHS Prairie Lakes location in Elrosa, MN, will continue to build on the company's promise of helping member-owners grow. "The expansion added on to the former fertilizer building and more than doubled our storage capacity, increasing storage to 11,000 tons. We also added two 14 ton fertilizer blenders to the location, which will work well alongside the single 10 ton blender we have used in the past," says Jerry Imdieke, location manager at the Elrosa location. "We are excited that this expansion will allow us to be able to offer greater service to our growers."
The expansion is part of CHS Prairie Lakes' long term vision of ensuring supply for member-owners. Says Scott McKay, agronomy division manager for CHS Prairie Lakes, "The project greatly expanded CHS Prairie Lakes' ability to store fertilizer, which will ensure we have product on-hand to meet fertilizer demand from area growers. It also allows us to purchase additional fertilizer units when pricing is lower, allowing us to keep prices low for our patrons."
This expansion at CHS Prairie Lakes seems to be in line with CHS Inc.'s plans for securing fertilizer supply. In August, CHS entered into a joint strategic venture with CF Industries Holdings, Inc. to secure additional fertilizer supply. In this agreement, CHS made an equity investment in CF Industries and entered into a supply agreement that allows CHS to annually purchase up to 1.7 million tons of UAN and urea at market prices from CF Industries.
CHS Prairie Lakes is excited to bring this expansion on board, as it allows for greater service to local growers with locations in the communities of Elrosa, Long Prairie, Glenwood, Hoffman, Cyrus, Lowry, Starbuck, and Park Rapids.
