City of Brooten *no* longer under a Boil Water Advisory

PUBLIC NOTICE for Brooten city residents on Wednesday afternoon, July 26, 2023: Brooten's city water supply may be contaminated due to a loss of pressure. Residents are advised to boil their water before drinking or food preparation to avoid getting sick. Below is the information provided by the city of Brooten and the Minnesota Department of Health.

What should I do?

Do not drink, brush teeth or cook with tap water without boiling it first. Or use a safe alternative such as bottled water. Bring all water to a rolling boil for one minute; let water cool before drinking; use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice.

Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in water.

Until we correct the contamination problem, we are providing safe, free drinking water at the following location: Brooten City Hall, 147 Central Avenue North.

What happened?

At some point overnight on Tuesday/Wednesday, July 25-26, the city of Brooten experienced a loss of pressure in the water system due to a loss of power. A loss of water pressure means that contamination could have entered our drinking water distribution system. There is an increased chance that the drinking water may contain bacteria that could make you sick. The affected areas included all parts of town.

What are we doing?

We are taking the following steps to correct the problem: We have restored power and pressure. We will let you know when tests show the water is safe to drink and you no longer need to boil your water. We expect to resolve the problem within 48 hours.

What may be the health effects?

Inadequately treated water may contain disease-causing organisms. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches.

If you are concerned about your health or the health of a family member, contact your health care provider.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
