The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa boys' basketball team took it on the chin against visiting Paynesville Area last Thursday, February 1. After playing a mostly strong first half as they were attempting to avenge a 79-30 loss on December 15, the Jaguars fell cold just before halftime.
The Bulldogs capped the Central Minnesota Conference series sweep with a 74-51 win as they kept pace with No. 4-ranked Eden Valley-Watkins. The Eagles are 8-0 in the league, while the Bulldogs are one game back at 7-1.
On Saturday at the former Eagle Valley elementary school in Clarissa, the Jaguars faced former section rival Browerville (11-7) and earned a hard-fought 63-56 win. The Tigers, who had won three straight coming into the game, are the second-ranked team in Sub-Section 5A-West.
Last April 1, as Browerville's track and field team was in the high school preparing for travel to an indoor meet, students and coaches noticed something was not right in the gymnasium. After contacting administrators, they exited the building.
Principal Patrick Sutlief later entered to assess what was happening and saw girders bending. After he exited the building, the gym roof partially collapsed from what was an unfortunate combination of a heavy amount of snow and a structural defect at a point where an addition was built in 1976 onto the original 1948 gymnasium.
Last November 7, Browerville voters passed a bond referendum by a 60-40 margin that will rebuild the gym while adding a student walking track, a new weight room and a wrestling / multipurpose room.
On Tuesday this week, the Jaguars made it two straight wins after defeating Kimball Area 70-58.
Now 12-7 overall, the Jaguars hold fourth place (5-4) in the CMC as they prepare for a trip to Holdingford this Friday. Next is a home game on Thursday, February 15 against EV-W.
In Sub-Section 6A-South, the Jaguars have a solid grasp of the No. 2 ranking. They lag far behind state-ranked West Central Area, however, who is No. 2 overall by QRF in Class 1A. B-B-E stands at No. 24, while Brandon-Evansville is at No. 55 and in third place in the subsection.
