In an incredible performance against a neighboring rival, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Babe Ruth baseball team overcame a late comeback bid by the Paynesville Area Bulldogs while earning a 5-4 win in the state tournament quarterfinals. The Elite 8-round game was played under full sunshine at Henning on Saturday afternoon, July 19.
The team is made of players who will be entering 8th and 9th grade this fall at B-B-E; they are in the Class of 2029 and Class of 2030.
The Jaguar bats were hot to start the game, and they scored 2 runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings and then another run in the bottom of the 3rd.
Against the Bulldogs, Baron Breitbach started and pitched 4 innings while surrendering no runs and just one hit. Jude Oeltjenbruns took the mound in the top of the 5th, and after Paynesville scored 4 runs in that inning, they were cut down with two strikeouts by Oeltjenbruns and a put out on a steal attempt at second base in the top of the 6th. Breitbach returned to the mound in the top of the 7th and fired one strikeout before the defense earned back-to-back 5-3 put outs to end the game.
Players of the Game awards were given out after the postgame handshakes. For B-B-E, Jace Mueller earned the Defensive Player of the Game with his outstanding work on the infield at third base. The Offensive Player of the Game went to McCoy Detloff.
Next: the Jaguars (17-2) face either Staples or Parkers Prairie in the state semifinals on Saturday night at approximately 7 p.m. in Henning.
