The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 16-U Babe Ruth baseball team defeated Sebeka 6-0 on Sunday, July 27 to claim the state championship. Playing under heavy humidity with calm conditions at Russ Jacobson Field in New York Mills as thunderstorms were flaring up across rural Minnesota, the Jaguars and Trojans battled through a well-played game that featured just one error. The win came on a 5-3 win by the Jaguars on Sunday morning in the state semifinals against Pine River-Backus/Menahga.
The Jaguars scored 2 runs in the top of the third inning and 4 more in the top of the seventh. In the seventh inning, the Jaguars plated 3 runs on RBI-singles and another when Grayson Rooney scored on a wild pitch.
B-B-E's Lance Radermacher started and pitched 6 innings, and Baron Breitbach was closer while the Jaguars recorded the final 3 outs to seal the win.
Sebeka advanced to the state title game by defeating Paynesville 4-2 in the other semifinal game. PRB/Menagha defeated Paynesville 4-3 in the third-place game.
Team members are Dylan Koob, Tyler Myers, Aiden Mueller, Baron Breitbach, Cameron Loe, Aiden Detloff, Elliot Spanier, Riley Gullickson, Walker Winter, Grayson Rooney, Kaden Kollman, Austin Berge and Lance Radermacher. Team bat boys are Brody Koob, Sawyer Detloff, Carter Loe and Grady Gullickson. The 16-U coaches included Jesse Niklaus, Bryce Bergeron and Ben Klaphake. Kaden DeRoo also coached for one day of the state tournament games on Thursday for pool play.
The attached video features a short video of the postgame celebration on the field after the final outs were recorded via a double play consisting of a pop fly on a line drive to shortstop Aiden Mueller and a quick 6-4 throw to second base (Austin Berge) for the put out.
