"Here is our Water of Life" Sesquicentennial celebration is Sunday in Arctander Township
A celebration is planned this Sunday at East Norway Lake Lutheran church of rural New London. It begins with worship at 10:30 a.m. followed by a catered meal and a 150th anniversary program.
It all culminates with an old-fashioned ice cream social that afternoon.
In the church's Centennial history written by the late Marvin Hauge (1922-2001), he noted that the church history at that time dated back 117 years. In 1858, the state of Minnesota was founded, and around the same time, the earliest pioneers from Europe began settling in the area of the present-day Sunburg and Norway Lake areas.
By 1866, the local families found need for Norway Lake's first church building. A log church was built in 1867 in Arctander Township and used for a period of roughly 7 years as the local population expanded. In the early 1870s, discussions were held and actions then taken to split the church into East Norway and West Norway Lake churches.
