GWP of Brooten sponsors Minnesota Kendama Open

Glacial Wood Products produces Kendama game devices

The second annual Minnesota Kendama Open is this Saturday and Sunday at the Mall of America in Bloomington. Glacial Wood Products of Brooten is the title sponsor of the event and a manufacturer of the unique Kendama handheld wooden game device. GWP has been building this line for over four years, and these products are sold across Asia, Europe and the U.S.

Day two (Sunday, Nov. 15) begins with the start of the finals round at 11 a.m. followed by intermediate finals at 11:30. Competition continues throughout the afternoon, including a freestyle event from 3 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. The open round finals is from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the awards ceremony is from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Kendama has the following parts, all manufactured by Glacial Wood Products under the "Sweets Kendamas" Homegrown line:

KEN The ken has a tapered spike at the top and a cup at the bottom which is the smallest of the three cups.

SARADO The middle piece, the sarado is two opposing cones that make the big cup and the small cup. The sarado is attached to the ken and the tama with the string as well as friction from the tapering ken.

TAMA The tama is the ball which is attached to the ken and sarado with the end of the string which is tied off with a bead inside the hole located on the opposite pole from where the string enters. The hole is drilled to fit the tama onto the spike at the top of the ken and the sarado keeps the tama from sliding to far down the ken allowing the tama to leave the spike without excessive friction during play.
