Five Jaguars advance to state individual tournament (VIDEO)

Five members of the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa wrestling team earned spots in the upcoming Class 1A state individual tournament, which runs Friday and Saturday this weekend (March 1-2) at Xcel Energy Center.

Three Jaguars have earned Section 5A titles at the individual tournament that was held on Saturday at Canby high school: Ryan Jensen at 139 pounds, Maximus Hanson at 172 and Carson Gilbert at 215. Earning section runner-up finishes with state berths were Tanner Viessman at 145 and Brett DeRoo at 152.

Ryan Jensen is 43-0, Hanson is 45-0, Gilbert is 39-3 and Viessman is 38-3 as the "Big Four" for the Jaguars who will lead the team into the Class 1A team state tournament today (Thursday).

Brett DeRoo, a junior, is 37-6.

At 189 pounds, Hunter Laage lost a heartbreaker by a 2-1 decision in the true second-place match to Paynesville's Peyton Hemmesch. He finished in third place at 189 and takes a 32-13 record into the team state tournament.

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg junior Aaron Jones advanced to state after winning a true second match against A-C-GC senior Ethan Whitcomb. Jones (35-13) had lost to B-B-E's Hanson in the championship. He is the son of Chad and Bobbie Jo Jones of DeGraff; Chad is a 1992 B-B-E graduate.
