Boys' basketball Jaguars drop close battle in playoff opener (VIDEO)

The No. 5-seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa boys' basketball team saw their season conclude in the quarterfinals of the Sub-Section 6A-South tournament on Thursday, March 6. The No. 4-seeded and host Brandon-Evansville Chargers overcame a 21-15 halftime deficit while claiming a 49-43 win over the Jaguars.

B-B-E came within a second of going into halftime ahead 21-12, but the Chargers got a buzzer-beating three-pointer on an off balance shot from the right corner by senior Tanner Riedel.

In the final scorebox, the Jaguars shot just 22 percent in the second half when they were held to just 22 points. B-B-E shot 5-for-31 on three-pointers for the game compared to 4-for-13 by the Chargers. Ultimately, a big difference in the game was Brandon-Evansville shooting 1-for-8 on threes in the first half and then 3-for-5 on threes on the second half.

In his final high school basketball game in the playoff opener, Luke Illies poured in 22 points on 41 percent field goal shooting (9-of-22) while hauling in a whopping 16 rebounds. Fellow senior Josh Walstrom also had a fine game with 10 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

In the attached video, action is shown from the second half that night starting with about 11 minutes to go in the game and the Chargers ahead 29-25.
