    On January 22, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Business Professionals of America team had 15 students compete at the Region BPA competition at Alexandria Technical College. At regions, B-B-E BPA students picked two or three competitions at the beginning of the school year and worked throughout the first semester to prepare for the regional competition.     Three businesses in our area were severely harmed by many years of wrongdoing by the Brooten Commercial Club. They are Rooney's Bar of Sedan and the KaDe Shack and Marcia's Bar in Brooten. Some who will read this don't know the full story, but I am happy to tell you that the three businesses just mentioned are regaining strength and are recovering from what happened to them leading up to the end of 2018.     At the Dairy Crisis meeting hosted at the Greenwald Pub in Greenwald on Thursday, January 30, numerous farmers and other interested individuals spoke out against the way the agriculture economy is stacked against small- and medium-sized family farmers. One man spoke his strong frustration at the time he attended a meeting hosted by a large agriculture co-op with over 300 people.     A review of tax forms submitted to the Minnesota Department of Revenue by former Brooten Commercial Club gambling manager Michelle Halls show that at least in one month, fraudulent figures were reported from the charitable gambling operation the club oversaw in Brooten and Sedan. This week (February 3-7), the Department of Revenue released LG100A forms for Marcia's Bar in Brooten dated July 2016 to December 2018.
