The Minnesota Newspaper Association held its 159th Annual MNA Convention and Trade Show at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest, Brooklyn Park from January 28-30. The closing keynote address on Friday was presented by Rufus Friday of the Center for Integrity in News Reporting. He presented data documenting the loss of trust in journalism in the U.S. and outlined strategies to help rebuild it.
The central message provided by Friday in his keynote speech was that news organizations need to remove politics from news reporting. In survey after survey, the public is saying loud and clear that they trust media organizations less and less.
The MNA Convention had more than 350 registrants. MNA thanks its members, volunteer speakers and convention sponsors for this year's success. Tara Brandl, co-owner of Above the Fold Publishing based in Tracy, Minnesota, and publisher of the Tracy Area Headlight Herald, is the new president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association.
The Bonanza Valley Voice newspaper will feature MNA Convention coverage in the February 12 issue. The attached video features Rufus Friday's speech given on January 30 in Brooklyn Park.
