Girls' basketball team defeats defending CMC champions (VIDEO)

Tenacious defensive rebounding proved key for the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa girls' basketball game at Royalton on Tuesday, January 6.

Facing a physical, fleet-footed Royals team that went 14-0 in the Central Minnesota Conference last season, the Jaguars snared 35 boards on the defensive end to hamper Royalton's 63-points-per-game offense in what was a rowdy, hostile environment.

After trailing 32-29 at halftime, the Jaguars played intense, lights-out defense down the stretch in a 58-53 win.

"This was a great road win!" said Coach Kristina Anderson after the game.

"We hit some big free throws down the stretch. Their fans were as rowdy as ever. It was such a good feeling walking out of there with the win."

B-B-E and Kimball Area now sit tied for first place in the CMC at 4-0. The Royals fall to 3-1 (4-6 overall), while Holdingford is 1-2 in fourth place.

On Monday, the Jaguars shook off considerable rust after a 9-day layoff from competition in a 65-39 win over visiting Maple Lake

Two big border battles lie ahead, with the Jaguars hosting Paynesville Area (2-8) on Friday. They finish a two-game homestand with Minnewaska Area (9-2, 3-1) coming to Belgrade next Tuesday, January 13.

Following that are two road games at Holdingford (January 15) and Sauk Centre (January 16). The Sauk Centre game is a girls/boys doubleheader.

In the attached video, action is featured from late in the first half of the Maple Lake game in Belgrade on January 5.
