  • Rubio, Sanders win Minnesota caucus vote

    Strong ground games for Republican presidential candidates Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz helped them take first and second place, respectively, in Minnesota’s presidential preference ballot held on Tuesday night this week. With over 70 percent of precincts reporting, Rubio had 35.4 percent of the vote (25,407) to Cruz’s 29 percent (20,858). The third-place finisher was Donald Trump, who had 21.8 percent (15,665).   • Rocking the house at UM-Morris

    The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Pep Band traveled to Morris on Monday, Feb. 29 to follow the B-B-E Jaguars boys' basketball team to the sub-section finals. Director Rachel Tessier made a point to have the band perform during timeouts, which drew many nice compliments from the crowd.   • Child care unionization dominates town hall meeting in Willmar

    Over 50 people attended a town hall meeting in Willmar on Saturday at Cornerstone Coffee in the Skylark Mall. Senator Lyle Koenen (Clara City) and Representative Dave Baker (Willmar) led the meeting, in which the issue of child care unionization spurred the most discussion. Beyond that topic, transportation and the Appleton prison also brought ample feedback from the crowd.     SAUK RAPIDS - The final minute of the game was not for the faint of heart. After trailing for nearly the entire game against Kimball Area, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa girls' basketball team had their backs to the wall with 36 seconds left in the Sub-Section 5A-South semifinals on Saturday, March 5. Their defense, battered and bruised all game by a strong post and interior game plus a few key three-point shots by sharp-shooting Cubs guards, shined when it mattered most in the final minutes....

    Here's video from the Sub-Section 5A-South championship game held one year ago (March 10, 2015) at New London-Spicer high school. The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars girls' basketball team squared off with conference rival Kimball Area and led 48-46 heading into the final minute. The Cubs tied it at 48-48, but senior Kinlee Swanson hit a game-winning bucket for a 50-48 lead before junior Ashley Trustheim iced the win with two late free throws in the closing seconds.
