    The Terrace Sportsmens Club held their annual Spring Bingo night with a crowd of about 45 people on Saturday, April 23.   • B-B-E Math Masters season is underway

    The B-B-E fifth grade Math Masters competed at the regional competition in Alexandria on April 22 in a group totaling 176 students. Overall B-B-E's team took fourth place out of 38 teams. Sam Mastey took first place overall in Fact Placement, while Ella Halvorson and Tiyana Schwinghammer tied for third place in that category.     Shown in the photos here are scenes at the mock crash held at the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa high school last Wednesday, April 27 for the 7-12 student body. The Mock Crash featured four B-B-E students as actors in a crash scene as the result of distracted driving.     A topsy-turvy, back-and-forth affair played out on Sunday afternoon (May 1) as the Elrosa Saints and Spring Hill Chargers resumed their storied amateur baseball rivalry at Chargers Field. Their last meeting resulted in the end of Elrosa's season last year at the Region 15C tournament, a state-qualifying game no less. Through three innings Spring Hill led 4-2.   • Syttende Mai is May 15 in Sunburg!

    The hand-quilted quilt shown is being sold by raffle as party of a full day of activities in Sunburg for their 12th annual Syttende Mai celebration on May 15. The quilt measures 88 inches high by 104 inches in width and will be on display at the Lake Region Bank or Kultur Hus in Sunburg. Next week's newspaper will include more detailed information on that day's schedule. (Last week's issue incorrectly said that the quilt is being auctioned, but it is being sold by raffle.)...

  • B-B-E speech lands four in state finals

    Four individuals from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in three categories earned spots in the Class 1A state finals at the state speech meet on April 15. These four plus four other teammates competed at the big show at Lakeville North high school. In second place was junior Molly Tengwall in storytelling. This is the second year in a row that she has earned a state medal. Last year she also took second place in that category.     The annual Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Prom is being held on Saturday, April 30. The dance will be held for the first time in school history at the Brooten Pavilion. The theme is "A Night to Remember", and Post-Prom will be held at the B-B-E elementary school. B-B-E was one of at least five area schools holding prom on this night.     The following was printed in the July 17, 1941 issue of the Brooten Review newspaper. It surfaced during the Bonanza Valley Voice's June 2015 interview with Donnie Beyl, a 1942 graduate of Brooten high school.     Senator Torrey Westrom (R-Elbow Lake), has co-authored SF 3192, a bipartisan piece of legislation that re-opens the Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Minnesota. Currently, Minnesota faces a prison overcrowding issue, placing an increasing burden on the state’s correctional system. Closed in 2010, the Appleton facility has the potential to house up to 1,600 inmates.     For the third year in a row, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa speech team claimed the Section 5A runner-up trophy. At Annandale for sections on April 9, B-B-E's team brought 10 speech students to compete for a berth in the Class 1A state meet. Out of those 10, eight will advance to the big show, which is April 15 at Lakeview North high school.     The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa track and field teams kicked off the 2016 season with the indoor Central Minnesota Conference meet last week Tuesday in St. Cloud. The meet was a chance for the athletes to get a taste of competition and also break up the monotony that can creep up during preseason drills. First-year head coach Tina Bauleke has a strong turnout of 30 students on her varsity roster between the boys' and girls' squads.     A return to varsity action after a three-year hiatus was a success for the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars fastpitch team. On Tuesday (April 12) this week, the Jaguars hosted the Upsala Cardinals on the home diamond at the elementary school. Upsala had an early 3-2 lead before the Jaguars jumped ahead with leads of 5-3 and 9-6. In the top of the sixth inning the Cardinals plated three runs to tie it at 9-9.     A host of changes are coming to the programming and curriculum of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa for the 2016-2017 school year. For students in grades 7-12, the changes are meant to expand offerings. In 11th and 12th grade, the changes should make scheduling easier with more electives available. “It’s great to have this conversation without the ‘what should we eliminate’ as part of it,” said Superintendent Matt Bullard at the school board meeting on March 21.     Donnie Lenarz of Elrosa has had a memorable and event-filled life. Now enjoying his 87th year of youthfulness, Lenarz is looking forward to spring and summer and the sights and sounds of baseball in the air. The youngest of five growing up with four older sisters, Lenarz had anything but an easy childhood or time as an adult. You'd never hear an ill word from him about his life, though.   • Armed bank robbery in Sunburg

    Shortly before 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, an armed bank robbery took place at Lake Region Bank in Sunburg. By 12:20 p.m., four law enforcement officials had responded to the scene. Kandiyohi County sheriff deputies were asking onlookers and those who were nearby the bank at the time of the robbery whether or not they have seen a blue minivan or full-size van.     A local young mother submitted this to the newspaper after she posted it on social media and received considerable feedback on it. To the parents, grandparents, relatives, siblings, or friends of teens/young drivers (even older) driving through any of the streets of Belgrade. I'm asking very kindly right now to please talk to those that drive through town about obeying the speed limit and keeping a watchful eye out for young kids.     The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Area Jaycees held their seventh annual chili cook-off on Saturday, March 12 at the Belgrade V.F.W. This year six teams competed to create the best chili in three categories. Each booth also competed for the best booth decoration and costumes with a St. Patrick's Day theme.
