    The 27th annual graduating class of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa schools held their annual commencement on Friday, May 27 at the high school gymnasium. Class valedictorian Alyssa Dalen and salutatorian Austin Trustheim gave senior speeches. The Class of 2016 selected high school Family and Consumer Science teacher Carin Hagemeyer to give the farewell speech on behalf of the school staff. The Class of 2016 had 47 graduates.     "Taking my Hand Out Of My Pocket" is an autobiography written out of a therapeutic and necessary need for healing for and by Lorie Tensen, the youngest child of the late Gerard Tensen and Doris Tensen of Brooten. Lorie was born as a biracial child and trans-racially adopted as a baby, growing up in the all-white farming community of Brooten. Her parents were a Dutch, Christian Reformed couple.     The weather was absolutely perfect on Sunday, May 15, when Sunburg held their 12th annual Syttende Mai celebration of their deep-rooted Norwegian heritage. The first 28 minutes of the 40-minute long parade is shown in the video below.     Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa music students performed two spring concerts on May 4 (elementary) and May 9 (high school). On Wednesday, May 4, the B-B-E elementary fifth and sixth graders performed a band and choir concert. It featured the first public performances of the newly-formed fifth and sixth-grade Jazz Band.   • Belgrade Garden Club donates trees to sixth graders

    The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa elementary sixth graders received spruce trees from the Belgrade Rosebud Garden Club last Friday. This has been an annual event for the club for the past 30 years. The Southwest Conservation District has been supplying the club with trees during these years and estimate that over 2,000 trees have been distributed to local sixth graders over that time.     David Heinze of Elrosa graciously spent part of last Friday showing Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa upper elementary students how to make homemade ice cream. With the assistance of his wife, Carol, and his daughter-in-law, Julie, Heinze brought a small John Deere gas engine to power a rotating drum that contains ice and a slot for ice cream ingredients.     The Sunburg Commercial Club is excited about a full day of activities planned for their 12th annual Syttende Mai celebration on Sunday, May 15.   • B-B-E Math Masters season is underway

    The B-B-E fifth grade Math Masters competed at the regional competition in Alexandria on April 22 in a group totaling 176 students. Overall B-B-E's team took fourth place out of 38 teams. Sam Mastey took first place overall in Fact Placement, while Ella Halvorson and Tiyana Schwinghammer tied for third place in that category. The Mock Crash featured four B-B-E students as actors in a crash scene as the result of distracted driving.     A topsy-turvy, back-and-forth affair played out on Sunday afternoon (May 1) as the Elrosa Saints and Spring Hill Chargers resumed their storied amateur baseball rivalry at Chargers Field.     The hand-quilted quilt shown is being sold by raffle as party of a full day of activities in Sunburg for their 12th annual Syttende Mai celebration on May 15. The quilt measures 88 inches high by 104 inches in width and will be on display at the Lake Region Bank or Kultur Hus in Sunburg.   • B-B-E speech lands four in state finals

    Four individuals from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in three categories earned spots in the Class 1A state finals at the state speech meet on April 15. These four plus four other teammates competed at the big show at Lakeville North high school. In second place was junior Molly Tengwall in storytelling. This is the second year in a row that she has earned a state medal. Last year she also took second place in that category.     The annual Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Prom is being held on Saturday, April 30. The dance will be held for the first time in school history at the Brooten Pavilion. The theme is "A Night to Remember", and Post-Prom will be held at the B-B-E elementary school. B-B-E was one of at least five area schools holding prom on this night. It surfaced during the Bonanza Valley Voice's June 2015 interview with Donnie Beyl, a 1942 graduate of Brooten high school.     Senator Torrey Westrom (R-Elbow Lake), has co-authored SF 3192, a bipartisan piece of legislation that re-opens the Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Minnesota. Currently, Minnesota faces a prison overcrowding issue, placing an increasing burden on the state’s correctional system. Closed in 2010, the Appleton facility has the potential to house up to 1,600 inmates.     For the third year in a row, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa speech team claimed the Section 5A runner-up trophy. At Annandale for sections on April 9, B-B-E's team brought 10 speech students to compete for a berth in the Class 1A state meet.     The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa track and field teams kicked off the 2016 season with the indoor Central Minnesota Conference meet last week Tuesday in St. Cloud. The meet was a chance for the athletes to get a taste of competition and also break up the monotony that can creep up during preseason drills.     A return to varsity action after a three-year hiatus was a success for the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars fastpitch team. On Tuesday (April 12) this week, the Jaguars hosted the Upsala Cardinals on the home diamond at the elementary school. Upsala had an early 3-2 lead before the Jaguars jumped ahead with leads of 5-3 and 9-6. In the top of the sixth inning the Cardinals plated three runs to tie it at 9-9.
