The Korean War had been underway for close to three years when DeWayne Lien of Brooten was drafted into the Army in April 1953. At the time, when the war would end was in doubt. "To this day it seems like an odd war to have fought in. Fighting communism, I suppose," said Lien, about what the war's purpose was. He remembers the dividing line, though: the 38th parallel. Following World War II, Korea was occupied by the Soviet Union north of the 38th parallel, while the U.S. occupied Korea south...

If I had endless time and many free hours each day, I'd write about every veteran I could find in our area. Instead, with limited free time in the past two weeks, I decided to focus on the oldest veterans I could talk to and go from there. This brings me to veterans who served in World War II or the Korean War. This week I have the honor of sharing stories from Donnie Beyl and John O. Bohmer, both certainly no strangers to the Bonanza Valley area. Other veterans will be featured next week and also hopefully in future issues in future months. Wh...

A shocking end crushed the hearts of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa players and fans alike on Saturday night when the Browerville/Eagle Valley Tigers throttled the Jaguars in a 3-1 sub-section semifinal win at Long Prairie. After B-B-E won continuous sub-section semifinal matches in Class 2A from 2002 to 2006 and then in Class 1A from 2007 to 2013, they have now lost two straight in that stage of the playoffs and have gone 1-1 in the postseason two years in a row. The season's end came without warning,...

At 11 a.m. on Tuesday this week, the doors opened for business at Classic Co. Bar and Grill in downtown Brooten. Over the lunch hour, head chef and manager Bob Paek reported that they had a nice crowd of about 20 people come for a bite to eat. Business remained steady throughout the day. When I stopped by with my family for supper at about 6 o'clock, traffic through the door picked up quite a bit. Overall, Paek and the rest of his crew were quite pleased with how the first day went. Their menu...

The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars volleyball team came out on a mission to start the Sub-Section 5A-West playoffs and methodically took apart Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in a 3-0 sweep on Thursday night. In front of a packed hometown crowd, with the B-B-E student section in a self-imposed "black out", the Jaguars jumped all over the Falcons while bolting to a 13-3 lead in game one. Head coach Kevin Weller knows that's exactly what's needed each and every night they can continue playing in the...

Undefeated conference champions has a nice ring to it. In the regular season finale last Thursday at Pierz, the Jaguars claimed a 3-2 win to take the CMC title alone for the ninth time in school history. The Jaguars also shared CMC titles with Pierz in 2002 and Maple Lake in 2006. In 1994, the Jaguars went 14-0 in the West Central South Conference before earning a co-championship in the WCCS in 1995 with New London-Spicer. Now it's on to the playoffs! The Jaguars are the number one seed in...

It was not a game for the faint of heart. Trailing 19-7 in the third quarter, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars football team had their work cut out for themselves against a surging Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity team on October 14 in the Section 4A playoff opener. For most of the game to that point, with seven minutes on the clock, the Jaguars were hamstrung offensively. It continued to the next series, when they went three-and-out, miffed a punt and gave the Bulldogs the ball on the B-B-E...

After getting to the podium, Dean DeKok paused and looked out at the crowd gathered on Saturday night at the Padua Pub for the first Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Hall of Fame banquet. "I got a call about two months ago from Wes Von Eschen talking about the Hall of Fame you guys have put together. Right away I think of all the other people who should be considered for something like this. What a privilege it is to be up here with you." DeKok, a 1962 graduate of Brooten high school, was one of eight...

While at this point they've clinched a share of the title, the Jaguars have eyes on winning it outright with a win next week at Pierz. On Tuesday this week, the Jaguars (6-0 in the conference) clinched a share of the CMC with a gutsy comeback 15-12 win in game five against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.
